During feudal times, weathervanes were distinctive signs of nobility, substituting for the noble's banner. It was not till the 18th Century that they were democratised. Their design or silhouette personified the trade or interests of its owner. Fixed to a finial at the top of a roof, weathervanes indicate wind direction. The stamped weathercock on our church bell towers remains the most symbolic.
