The finial is the ornament which is placed at the crest of the roof, where the hip rafters meet. While its initial function was to protect the crown post from rainwater infiltration, the finial quickly became a decorative element on roofs continuing the roofline in an elegant, vertical line. Square, circular, squat or slender, the finial adapts to different shaped roofs.
Decorated with a cone it can also be used as a pinnacle. Finials are used alone or to support weathervanes. Perfume pans are classical architectural ornaments initially made of stone. They are shaped like a vase topped with a flame.
