The first dormer windows appeared around the 13th Century, at the same time as sloped roofs. They essentially provided ventilation for the roof space and let in very little light. In the 14th Century, dormer windows were enlarged to provide light for attics or additional rooms under the roof. But it was not till the 19th Century that their use became widespread.

In various styles and shapes ranging from simple to richly decorated with leaves and rosettes, dormer windows are typical of lovely classical roofs the beauty of which they enhance. Thanks to their mastery of manufacturing techniques, the Ateliers d'Art Français can produce them in harmonious, consistent series.
